Summer stories

Here are some stories from last year's summer staff projects.

Leó Steinn
Leó was vibing at one of Landsnet´s digital substations

Leo Steinn Larsen worked as a summer employee for Þórarinn Bjarnason in Construction & Grid Services Division.
This summer has been informative and instructive, I've learned a lot about high voltage and electricity. The staff are great in every way and always willing to help. My summer job experience will be useful in the coming school year as well as in the job market in the future. I'd like to thank the Landsnet team for the summer. The atmosphere in Gylfaflöt (the head-quarters) is great, and the food is awesome.
Thank you!

Jóna and Davíð doing IT stuff

Jóna and Davíð: The two of us have been summer workers at the Information Technology Department this summer. We're wrapping up our last week at LN (for now) and wanted to share a little.
Our main job was to help Landsnet's employees with various technical stuff. The projects were both big and small and ranged from changing HDMI cables to getting Geithálsi Suður ready two minutes before a meeting. There is never a dull day in this job!
Our learning experience from the job was immense. Gummi G took us to an online course which showed us the Landsnet network in detail. Everyone in the IT department was always willing to answer our questions about computers and systems.
Thanks for a great summer!

Valgerður & Ottó in control at the Control Centre of Landsnet

Valgerður & Otto:
Hi there! The two of us have been  summer workers at the Control Centre  this summer. It's been a pleasure  working here and we'd like to thank  you for the warm welcome.
Control Centre projects have been  varied and many have involved  PowerFactory. We have carried out system analyses of the national system, examined the effect of controls on transfer limits of various profiles and laid the basis for specifications for controls whose aim is to improve transfer limits. After learning more about PowerFactory, we prepared a user guide to assist others in their first steps with the program. In addition, we fixed various aspects of  the base system, added and updated  information about lines and small-scale  power stations. Various other projects  ended up on our desk, such as helping  with disturbance logging, preparing  PowerBI reports, and becoming  Instagram stars.
We have had plenty to do and are so  much more experienced after an  eventful summer at Landsnet.

Thank you!

Viðar and Kári aka the "data brothers"

Viðar and Kári: We will be saying goodbye to Landsnet and its brilliant employees with this post, which describes our summer contribution to Landsnet.
Kári and I worked together on the Data team this summer, run by the wonderful Brynjar and Samuel. Projects varied in both size and type. The majority of the work this summer involved fixing various types of connections, both in reports and in the data warehouse. Other exciting projects included retrieving data for Landsnet's fleet using Python, and updating, and automating the Performance Report so that it won't have to be rewritten every year (the Performance Report will soon be available on Landsnet's website).
We feel very lucky to have worked so closely with Brynjar and Sam, as we learned something new every day. We have gained invaluable insight into data handling, and we learned a great deal about the programming languages SQL and Python this summer.
The Landsnet team made working here a pleasant and enjoyable experience, so we want to thank them all.

FIELD TRIP!!

Field trip to see the substations in Geitháls, Kolviðarhól, Hveragerði and Lækjartún.
Teddi organized a fascinating field trip for our university students, taking us to explore four substations in Geitháls, Kolviðarhól, Hveragerði, and Lækjartún. Teddi expertly guided us through each station, illuminating the rich history of their development and sharing their unique challenges and triumphs. We were struck by the incredible impact of digital technology and its rapid progress in this industry.
The trip began with a comprehensive safety course, as navigating substations can pose significant dangers. Our first stop was the Geitháls substation, Landsnet's largest outdoor facility, where we marveled at its vast size and impressive power capabilities. Next, we visited the Kolviðarhól substation, where we saw firsthand the challenges Landsnet faces with natural forces and sulfur in the area. On our lunch break in Hveragerði, we even had the chance to visit a smaller substation along the way. Finally, we arrived at the Lækjartún substation, a state-of-the-art digital facility that showcases the benefits of cutting-edge technology and advanced knowledge. We were amazed by the positive impact of digital solutions that we could witness with our own eyes, and appreciated the increased safety that comes with smaller, higher-capacity substations.
This field trip was both educational and enjoyable, and we are grateful to Teddi for the unforgettable experience.
